Considerable Increase of Road Freight Transportation between Ukraine and the EU

In 2016, there has been an increase of 20.3% in goods imported by road to Ukraine from the countries of the European Union and 6.9% in exports against the same period of the previous year.

According to the data from Eurostat, the total volume of imports to Ukraine from the EU for 6 months in 2016 made 2142 thousand tons (the increase expressed in physical terms totaled 360 thousand tons). The growth in road traffic flow took place from almost all the countries of the European Union excepting Finland and Bulgaria where negative dynamics was observed.

The greatest increase in imports expressed in physical terms was from Poland (of 18.2% totaling 115 thousand tons), Germany (of 28.5% totaling 77 thousand tons), the Netherlands (of 39.7% totaling 35 thousand tons) and Slovakia (of 40.9% totaling 27.8 thousand tons).

As for growth dynamics in imports to Ukraine, the highest rates were observed from Greece (of 96.1% totaling 8.4 thousand tons), Denmark (of 43% totaling 7.1 thousand tons) and France (of 37% totaling 15.2 thousand tons). Freight transportation from Croatia and Luxembourg increased 1.7 times even though the physical volume was insignificant.

In exports from Ukraine to the European Union, negative dynamics in traffic flow was observed to the Netherlands, Austria, France, Finland and Portugal with the most significant decrease to the Netherlands (of -39.3% totaling -109 thousand tons). At the same time, road traffic flow increased to the other countries of the EU.

In total, 2051 thousand tons of cargoes were transported to the countries of the European Union from Ukraine by road (the increase expressed in physical terms made 162 thousand tons). The most significant increase expressed in physical terms was observed to Romania (of 89.6% totaling 90 thousand tons), Poland (of 9.1% totaling 60 thousand tons) and Hungary (of 21.5% totaling 39 thousand tons).
